A weird thing about the service industry is the amount of work related drinking that occurs. It’s common knowledge that people who work in the service industry enjoy their tipple, but beyond after hours drinking, many bars and restaurants do a fair amount of wine, beer, and spirits tasting to familiarize the staff with the menu offerings. Holding yourself together while making tasting notes and asking pertinent questions while drinking 6 or 8 or 12 varieties of some alcohol or another is definitely a learned skill.

All of which is to say that this afternoon’s wine tasting has left me feeling a bit melancholy.

Oh, and also that I want to sit underneath a hot sun and drink this wine.

While re-watching Arrested Development for the 6th (7th? Some embarrassingly large number.) time recently, I realized that Charlize Theron’s character is actually a very smart comment on the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. That is, the whimsical and quirky behaviors of the MPDG are also the behaviors of someone with a developmental disability.

Undoubtedly, I’m not the first to have this thought, and surely someone else has written about it in more depth, but it made me feel clever for a moment.

Also, if any undergraduates are thinking about attending a “What can you do with a degree in humanities?” meet and greet at their university, the answer is the above. This is what you can do with a humanities degree.

Following an epic rearrangement of my Netflix queue while drinking my wake up coffee, I am now listening to Ani DiFranco’s Dilate based on some perceived romantic slight, exactly the same way I have for the last thirteen (fourteen?) years.

To compensate, I have synced my iPhone so that I won’t lose important information the next time I leave it in a cab, and before I leave for work I plan to write a big check to pay off an old medical bill.
